The Beauty of Sapphire
The birthstone for September is sapphire so we thought we would share a little bit about this beautiful gemstone.
Sapphires are normally associated with the color blue. However, what many are not aware of is that there are what are called “fancy” sapphires that come in a wide array of hues, “parti-colored” that show a combination of colors, and some even exhibit something called “color change” when seen in different lighting.
Another thing you may not know is that the species of sapphire is known as corundum. The only color under the rainbow of this species that is not a sapphire is red, that is called ruby.
In ancient times, sapphires were thought to be protective against envy, and even against poisoning. They have also been associated with royalty and romance.
