5 Times You Really Should Take Your Engagement Ring Off
Avoiding certain activities can help contribute to the longevity and health of your engagement ring. Here we’ve compiled a list of 5 times you should take your engagement ring off to keep it looking like the day you got it.
1. Cleaning the house (including doing the dishes!): Many household cleaners contain harsh chemicals that may damage softer gemstones or cause discoloration to your ring’s metal. Store rings in a safe place away from where you are cleaning to prevent cleaners from coming into contact with your rings and also to avoid hitting and banging your ring as you are working around your house. Trust us; your ring will thank you.
2. Working out or heavy lifting: While you’re probably ok leaving your engagement ring on while doing most cardio, any exercise that puts extreme pressure on your ring (such as weight lifting, CrossFit, or using weight lifting machines) could cause scratches in the band or even crack the metal. This principle also applies to outdoor sports like golf and tennis. The hard hits your hands take could cause gemstones to be knocked loose. Leaving your rings at home will ensure a stress free workout.
3. Sleeping: The tiny fibers of the sheets can get stuck under your prongs causing pull and wear as you toss and turn in your sleep. Removing your ring before you go to bed will ensure both you and your ring enjoy a restful night’s sleep.
4. Swimming: We’ve heard too many stories of people losing their wedding rings to the bottoms of lakes and oceans. The reason for this is because cold water can make your fingers shrink and your rings become looser. Even if you’re swimming somewhere where your ring can be more easily found, like in a swimming pool, the chlorine in swimming pools can cause metal deterioration and discoloration (especially after prolonged submersion). To ensure your ring stays beautiful (and on your finger) leave your ring at home whenever you’re going into water.
5. Gardening: The hidden rocks in dirt can cause gemstones to be chipped or knocked loose – on top of getting your ring super dirty!
